Today’s three cards all begin with the same simple card sketch. Using a sketch is a great way to jumpstart your creativity—it gives you a foundation to build on while still leaving plenty of room to experiment and make it your own.

Think of a sketch as a guide, not a rulebook. You can rotate it, simplify it, layer it up, or swap elements depending on your style and supplies. It’s all about interpreting the design in a way that works for you.

In these examples, the sketch acts as a starting point, but each card takes on its own personality through color, texture, and focal elements.

A Sweet Layered Background

This take on the sketch is soft and dimensional, with layered elements following the central focal layout. The Script Bold Prints background was stamped and white heat embossed onto Orchid Cardstock, creating a striking contrast that really makes the pattern shine. If you’re looking for a more subtle effect, try clear embossing powder or stamp with a similar shade of ink for a tone-on-tone look.

The heart focal point follows the sketch structure and is filled with a cheerful floral pattern created using the Meadow Blooms Cover Plate Die along with the Meadow Blooms Color Layering Stencils. For added softness and dimension, a few leaves were die cut from vellum and tucked behind the layers.

The sentiment is from the incredibly versatile Everyday Sentiment Strips 2 Stamp Set—perfect for adding a meaningful message without distracting from the design. This version of the sketch really shows how layering and texture can transform a simple layout into something detailed and eye-catching.

The entire panel was popped up on a Waterfall cardbase created from the Scalloped Rectangle Infinity Dies, which mimics the shape of the flower petals and adds such a sweet touch.

Windowed Elegance with Script Texture

This interpretation of the sketch swaps the central shape for a window design, showing how flexible a sketch can be. The Positive Script background was stamped onto Bellini Cardstock and gold heat embossed, adding warmth and elegance while still keeping the pattern soft and cohesive.

The floral image, from the Here for You Stamp & Cut, was also gold heat embossed and colored with alcohol markers for a polished, detailed look. It becomes the focal point framed inside the arched opening, which was created using the Arches Infinity Dies.

This is a great example of how you can adapt a sketch—try a rectangle, circle, or any shape you like to frame your focal image. The sentiment, once again from the Everyday Sentiment Strips 2 Stamp Set, is tucked neatly into the design, reinforcing the structure of the sketch while keeping the overall look clean and balanced.

Bold Texture with a Graphic Twist

For this version, the sketch is simplified into bold layers and texture. The Rain Texture Bold Prints Cling Stamp may be subtle here, but it plays an important role—adding just enough background interest to elevate the entire design.

The rain texture pattern was stamped onto Cascade Cardstock using Dusty Blue Ink for a soft, tone-on-tone effect. The Daisy Cover Plate Die was used to cut the design from this panel, creating the bold floral background. The same die was used again to dry emboss the design onto a Beeswax Cardstock panel.

Layering these two panels together creates a really fun effect—the embossed yellow layer underneath gives the illusion that the floral shapes are popping out from the top panel. It’s a simple but impactful way to add texture and dimension.

To finish the card, a vellum label was die cut using the Tag Frame Infinity Dies, and the bold sentiment from the Totally Awesome Stamp & Cut was added on top. This clean, graphic take on the sketch shows how powerful texture and layering can be, even with minimal elements.
