Expanding your Watercolors

Kelly Rasmussen

Hero Arts Liquid Watercolors currently come in 15 different gorgeous colors. But with one secret weapon, you can triple the amount of colors you have. What is that secret weapon? It's White Liquid Watercolor! By mixing in different amounts of the white with the colored watercolors you can achieve almost any shade of color you need.

On this card I used two different colors of liquid watercolor, Pink and Leaf. To achieve the three different shades of pink, I put three drops of the Pink Liquid Watercolor into three different wells on my palette. Then I added 2 drops of white to one well, 4 drops to the next and 6 drops to the last one. You can play around with these numbers to achieve your desired color. Just know that the more white you add, the more opaque the color will be.

For the trees on this card, I simply cut out some triangles from watercolor paper. Then I painted each one a different color with my newly created watercolors.

The sentiment is from the Peace, Love + Joy clear stamp set and took a little bit of planning before stamping, but it was totally worth it in the end. And my MISTI Stamp Tool was a must to make it happen!

First, I stamped the "peace + joy" message on a white panel with black ink. Then I laid out my Christmas tress over the top and adhered them with just a bit of removable adhesive so they wouldn't shift while stamping. I removed the three trees that are on the top layer, leaving just the second layer of three trees. I inked up my message and stamped over the trees. Then I removed those three trees and lined up the remaining three trees and stamped the message on those. Once all the pieces were stamped, I used foam adhesive to adhere the trees to the card, making sure the letters were all lined up.

I finished off the message by stamping the "wishing you" and "this season" on the white panel. Then I mounted the panel to a black folded card.

Hope you enjoyed my tip for expanding your watercolors! Have an amazing day! :)

Wonderful card Kelly and indeed with white you can make much more colours than the 15 that are there. Thank you so much for your great post. Have a nice weekend.
