How to Make a Flowing Florals Birthday Card with 3D Embossing Folders and Layered Stencils

Hello crafters! It’s Lisa Tilson here with you today to share a card using the Timeless Textures Collection by Simon Hurley. I am going to be doing a step-by-step photo tutorial showing you how to create this arch-framed birthday card using the super pretty Flowing Florals 3D Embossing Folder along with the Flowing Florals Layered Stencils. Also included in this collection is another beautiful 3D Embossing Folder with layering stencils, which is called Hummingbird Garden. This set also comes with dies to cut the hummingbirds out. There is also a standalone 3D Embossing Folder called Rattan Cane.

So, let’s get started with my card for today.

Embossing The Cardstock

1. Start by taking an A2 panel of Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock (4.25” x 5.5”) and spritzing it on both sides with water.

TIP: Spritzing the cardstock before embossing helps to prevent the cardstock from cracking or tearing, and it loosens the fibres. This means that the cardstock will stretch into those deep intricate areas of the folder, resulting in a deep and even texture across the panel.

2. Place the panel inside the Flowing Florals 3D Embossing Folder.

3. Insert the embossing folder in between the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine Platform Base (A) and Adaptor Plate (D)
4. Run the sandwich through the die cutting machine.

Adding Colour to Your Embossed Panel

1. Make sure your embossed panel is dry and then place it onto a sticky mat and admire the beautiful texture!

TIP: This panel has a lot of texture, and although it is placed on a sticky mat, tape has also been used to secure it in place. The deep texture means that the panel doesn’t sit quite as flat on the mat as a plain panel of cardstock would.

2. Align Stencil 1 from Flowing Florals Layered Stencils over your embossed panel and use Best Ever Craft Tape to tape it securely at the sides.
3. Use small pieces of yellow tape to mask off the flowers that will be inked up with a different colour.
4. Using a Medium Blending Brush, apply Picked Raspberry Distress Ink through the stencil. Concentrate the colour at the base of the flower and fade it out towards the ends.
5. Slowly and carefully remove the yellow tape to prevent any tearing.

6. Next, place the pieces of yellow tape over the pink flowers.
7. Using a Medium Blending Brush, apply Wild Honey Distress Ink through the remaining flowers. Again, concentrate the colour at the bottom of the flowers and fade it out towards the ends.
8. Carefully remove the yellow tape.

9. Align Stencil 2 over the embossed panel.
10. Blend Twisted Citron Distress Ink through all the open areas.

11. Using a Mini Blending Brush, apply Mowed Lawn Distress Inks to the lower areas of the stems.

TIP: This doesn’t need to be 100% accurate. The point of adding an additional green onto the stems is just to give them some extra interest.

12. Align Stencil 3 over the embossed panel and secure it in place.
13. Blend Salvaged Patina Distress Ink through the open areas.

14. Align Stencil 4 over the embossed panel.
15. Blend Twisted Citron through the open areas.

16. Use a Mini Blending Brush to apply Mowed Lawn Distress Ink to the bottom areas of the leaves.

Creating the Frame

For all the die cutting, use the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine with the die cutting sandwich as follows (from bottom to top):

• Plate A – Platform Base
• Plate B – Platform Top
• Plate C – Cutting Plate
• Plate C – Cutting Plate

The cardstock/die will be inserted between the two cutting plates with the die sitting on top of the cardstock, cutting edge down.

1. Take the Essential Arches Etched Dies and remove the 4^th and 5^th largest arch dies.
2. Tape the 4^th largest arch die onto an A2 panel of Classic white ColorWheel Cardstock.
3. Tape it in place.

4. Die cut the panel using the sandwich above.

5. Place the die-cut arch panel onto another A2 panel of Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock.
6. Secure it in place at the top using Best Ever Craft Tape.

7. Using the largest arch panel as a guide, place the 5^th largest arch die onto the panel below and tape it in place.
8. Make sure that your die is equidistant the whole way round.
9. Run the two panels through the die cutting machine.

10. You will now have two perfectly aligned arch frames.

Creating the Sentiment

1. Take the Layered Happy Birthday Etched Dies and place the word die onto a piece of glitter cardstock from Gold Assortment Treasured Cardstock.
2. Place the shadow die onto some white cardstock. The shadow die will need to be die cut twice from white cardstock.
3. Run them through the die-cutting machine.

NOTE: The dies have been placed cutting side up to more easily show you which die is which. Before die cutting, flip them over so the cutting side sits on the cardstock and tape them in place.

4. Remove the negative pieces of the Happy Birthday Word Die using the Precision Tool from Handy Craft Tool Set. The “p”, “y” and the straight section of the “B” are not joined to the main die cut, so try not to lose them!

5. Add small dabs of Bearly Art Glue onto the back of the word die. Tap off any excess glue onto some scrap paper.

6. Place the word die onto one of the white shadow die cut pieces.

7. Adhere the “p” and “y” as well as the straight section of the “b” in place.

8. Add liquid glue onto the remaining white shadow die cut and adhere the other piece on top. This just gives the sentiment some extra stability.

Assembling the Card

1. Add glue onto the back of the embossed panel and adhere it onto an A2 top-folding Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock note card (11” x 4.25”, scored and folded at 5.5”).

2. Adhere the smaller arch frame directly onto the embossed panel using liquid glue.

3. Add foam tape onto the back of the larger arch frame panel.

4. Remove the backing from the foam tape and add liquid glue onto it. The application of the liquid glue will allow you a little bit of wiggle room for the next step.
5. Place this larger arched panel down over the smaller arched panel. You should now have both frames in place, and they will be perfectly aligned with each other.

6. Add some foam tape onto the back of your die-cut sentiment and place it towards the bottom of the embossed panel.

7. Add some Gold Mix Color Essentials Gems into the white areas of the embossed panel to finish the card.

I hope you find today’s tutorial useful. This panel creates such a pretty design and the texture from the 3D embossing is fabulous – not only visually but also when you run your fingers over it! Using a double arch frame adds a little extra interest into the mix and the gold glitter and gems give it some gorgeous sparkle.
