From Paper to Patent Leather: Crafting a Textured Designer Purse
Hi, crafty friends, it’s Heejung Hunsberger here, and I am incredibly honored to be featured as a Guest Designer on the Spellbinders blog today. April brings us the chic and highly anticipated "We All Have Baggage" Collection, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the star of the show: the Designer Purse Etched Dies.
My goal for today's project is to show you how a few thoughtful techniques - like 3D embossing and precise layering—can transform simple cardstock into a high-end, miniature masterpiece. Let’s dive into the details!
If you'd like to get to know me better, visit my blog or follow me on Instagram. Additionally, I have a YouTube channel where I regularly post video tutorials.
Die-Cutting the Luxe Foundations
First, die-cut the elements using Spellbinders Treasures Cardstock for a high-end feel:
Bag Body & Straps: Die-cut the main body, handle, and shoulder strap from Onyx Mirror Metallic
Front Flap: Die-cut from Anchor cardstock for a sophisticated matte contrast.
To transform the flat cardstock into "alligator leather," place the central Onyx Mirror Metallicpanel inside the Dimpled 3D Embossing Folder and run it through your machine. The gloss of the mirror cardstock combined with the deep 3D texture creates a stunning patent leather effect.
The Art of Assembly (The Project Highlight!)
Adhere the grey Anchor flap to the top center of your textured black body.
Add the gold hardware—the buckles on the flap and the central clasp at the bottom—to give it that designer branding.
Attach the top handle and the shoulder strap using the tiny gold connector pieces. The precision in how these fine die-cut pieces are layered is key to achieving that authentic luxury look.
Emboss a piece of Mint cardstock using the Molded Frame 3D Embossing Folder. This creates a structured, double-frame effect that elegantly serves as the background stage for our purse.
Place the label in your stamping tool and position the sentiment from the Hero Arts Keep Calm stamp set (part of the We All Have Baggage Collection)
Stamp the sentiment using Black Ink for a clean, bold finish.
Final Assembly and Luxurious Finishes
Adhesion: Use liquid glue to adhere the assembled designer purse and the floral cluster directly to the embossed Mint background panel.
Dimension: Apply foam squares to the back of the stamped sentiment label and adhere it above the purse for a popped-up effect.
The Final Polish: To truly elevate the card, scatter Fashion Gold Embellishments around the sentiment and the purse. This final detail adds that essential "designer" sparkle and a sophisticated image.
I hope this tutorial inspires you to experiment with textures and precise assembly on your next project! Be sure to check out the entire We All Have Baggage Collection at Spellbinders for more amazing bag styles and clever collaborations.
