September My Monthly Hero Countdown: Idea #1 + Giveaway!

Sep 01, 2017 Sally Traidman

Hello and welcome as we begin the countdown to the release of the September My Monthly Hero kit! Release day is Tuesday, September 5th at 1pm Eastern/10am Pacific, one day later than usual due to the Labor Day holiday. We’ll be here throughout the long weekend, sharing ideas for using both the main kit, as well as new optional add-on products that will be available on Tuesday. And don’t forget to comment on each and every Countdown post - we’ll be giving away a kit on Tuesday morning, before the kit launches! Here’s Sally with a first look at the kit!

I am just loving our September My Monthly Hero with color layering sunflowers and pumpkins. Vincent Van Gogh would be proud! I decided to focus on the sunflower and once I started stamping I couldn’t stop (yeah, I am known for that!). For my first card, I took the first layer and stamped it all over my white card in a few yellow shades. I randomly stamped “golden” yellows for the second layer. Orange was the third layer to crisp it up. For the centers I used caramel and then brown. I added a greeting on a small scrap and tied on some raffia and the little leaf charm.

Next up I wanted a field of sunflowers, so I stamped the stalks in two greens on white cardstock. Again I used the same colors as above for the sunflowers. I wanted to incorporate the dies, so I mounted one that was die cut to add depth.

This week I was in full blown sewing mode, so I stamped the sunflower once again, all the layers, on unbleached muslin. I heat set the inks with an iron. Cut another piece of fabric to back it with and sew around the outline and some of the petals. Next you cut a tiny hole in the back layer. Stuff petals with batting or cotton, poking it to the ends. Sew on a button for the center. Cut a leaf from fabric or felt and attach to the back. Stitch closed on the back and add a pin so you can wear it. This flower is very small and detailed for stuffing, but it was fun!

While my sewing machine was out, I stitched a small “background” to put on a kraft card. I once again stamped and die cut one sunflower. I added a sunflower charm in the center after foam mounting. You can select any word greeting from the set. (I “uncurved" mine by twisting the stamp before mounting it on the acrylic.)

Lastly I always try to make something other than what it’s intended use was supposed to be. I took the center of the flower and made it into a sun. (Also, look at the pumpkin stem…it can double as a sun ray!) Add words and gems for a quickie little gift enclosure.
