One Jolly Die Set, So Many Possibilities!
Hi, I'm Joy Baldwin, aka Create It With Joy! Today we're having some fun with the Jolly Die Set from the November My Monthly Super Hero Kit.
I LOVE a good sentiment die! They're some of my favorite products to create with because they're incredibly versatile. A large word die can become the focal point of your card, a colorful background, a shaker window, or a beautiful dimensional element.
I made three finished Christmas cards, along with some additional samples showing different ways to layer the letters and shadows. Let's get creative!
Stack Your Die Cuts for Beautiful Dimension
One of my favorite ways to use a large sentiment die is to create dimension by stacking multiple die cuts together.
For this card, I created three colorful JOLLY sentiments in different shades of green. The stacked layers give each word a nice, substantial look and really help the lettering stand out against the soft pink background.
Here's how to create this dimensional effect:
Die cut the JOLLY letters multiple times from your chosen cardstock colors.
Adhere matching letters together to build thickness and dimension.
Attach the stacked letters to the coordinating white shadow die cuts.
Arrange three JOLLY sentiments vertically on your card panel.
Finish with smaller stamped greetings from the Let's Be Jolly Stamp & Cut set.
I love how the green lettering pops against the pale pink background! The smaller sentiments add a playful touch and turn each JOLLY into its own festive greeting.
Turn Your JOLLY Sentiment Into a Shaker Card
Shaker cards are always an absolute blast to create! And a large sentiment die makes it so easy to create a fun, interactive design.
For this card, I used the JOLLY letters to create shaker windows filled with colorful little shaker bits. The letters become the star of the card, with all that fun movement tucked right inside the word!
A few things that make this design special:
Large letter openings: The JOLLY die creates a bold focal point with plenty of room for shaker elements.
Colorful shaker bits: Add a festive pop of color with sequins, beads, chunky glitter or any other sparkly bits you have in your stash.
Stamped foliage: Soft mint greenery and bright red berries from the Let's Be Jolly Stamp & Cut set frame the sentiment beautifully.
Coordinating greetings: The smaller stamped sentiments fit perfectly around the large letters to complete the message.
I positioned the JOLLY sentiment toward the bottom right of the card, leaving plenty of open space for the foliage. It creates a beautiful balance while keeping all the attention on those fun shaker letters!
Turn JOLLY Into JOY for a Colorful Background
Don't you love finding ways to get even more out of your die collection? Here's a fun little trick: remove a couple of letters from JOLLY and you can spell JOY!
For this card, I die cut the letters J, O, and Y in several different cardstock colors, including red, pink, mint, and bright green.
Instead of creating one large greeting, I arranged the letters repeatedly across the card panel to make a colorful, all-over background.
Here are a few tips for trying this technique:
Choose several coordinating cardstock colors for a playful holiday palette.
Die cut multiple J, O, and Y letters.
Arrange the letters vertically across your card panel, mixing colors as you go.
Allow some letters to extend beyond the edges of the panel, trimming away the excess.
Add a stamped and die cut holly accent for a festive finishing touch.
You could also stack several JOY die cuts together, just like the first card, to create a dimensional focal point.
The holly leaves and berries from the Let's Be Jolly Stamp & Cut set add just the right amount of Christmas charm!
More Ways to Layer and Customize Your Word Dies
There are so many other ways to play with these dies! I experimented with different cardstock colors, specialty papers, and shadow techniques to see how many unique looks I could create.
Here are some fun ideas to try with your own large word dies:
Ink-blended shadows: Add ink blending to the shadow die cut for a soft pop of color behind the letters. It's a simple way to make the background part of the design.
Vellum and acetate: Try cutting the shadow layer from vellum for a soft, translucent effect or acetate for a fun, nearly invisible backing.
Glittery accents: Use glitter cardstock for the letters or shadow to add some extra holiday sparkle. I especially love mixing glitter with solid cardstock colors.
A wreath-inspired letter O: Turn the O into a tiny Christmas wreath with greenery details. It's such a cute way to give the sentiment a little something extra!
Mix-and-match lettering: Die cut the letters in different cardstock colors to create your own custom holiday color combinations. You can even mix in specialty cardstock for added texture.
Monochromatic designs: Keep the letters and shadow in coordinating shades of one color for a clean, elegant look. A little dimension makes this simple technique really shine!
I hope these ideas got your creative juices flowing! As you can see, there are so many ways to use the JOLLY Die Set, and it's fun to see how different each project can look with just a few changes.
Think of all the Christmas cards you could make! Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope you'll come back again for more crafty inspiration!
