June My Monthly Hero Countdown: Idea #5 + Giveaway

Hello and welcome as we continue the countdown to the release of the June My Monthly Hero Kit! Release day is Monday, June 8 at 1pm Eastern/10am Pacific. Now let's join Debi for another beautiful look at the kit!

It might be smack dab in the middle of the year but the new My Monthly Hero Kit for June is anything but middle of the road! I’m Debi Adams and I’m so excited to give you a sneak peek into the new June kit. It’s all about the great outdoors, whether on land, sea or sky. Today I chose to create a card that is all about calm and peaceful because I think we all could use a little bit of that these days. I used watercolors on the NEW black watercolor paper that’s part of the kit, and created a sunset scene. The sailboat, moon, stars and sentiment are just a small part of the larger collection of images.

Obviously, watercoloring on black watercolor paper can be a challenge, but with several layers of watercolor paints, it was easy and doable! I literally drew a horizontal line slightly below the middle of the card with a pencil and then started painting. Layers of yellow, orange and a tad bit of white made up the sunset with blues, yellows, aqua and slices of orange being used for the water. I came back in with black paint to make a dark sky. Honestly, it looks like I’m a painter but the watercolors really do the magic. Keep blending until you get what you like! If you want, add bits of grass to the side with green and yellow watercolors so that it appears as if you are standing off shore.

For the waves I used a fine tip, white gel pen. When I finished my background, I added a bit more depth with some colored pencils and then stamped my sailboat using Intense Black Ink. Because watercolor paper is uneven, I used my MISTI to stamp the image onto the paper several times.

The moon, stars and sentiment were stamped several times using Unicorn White Pigment Ink. I mounted the image onto a top-folding, 4 1/4” x 5 1/2” card base. Ah, now if only I was resting on that sailboat! Cannot wait to show you what else there is in the kit but for now you will need to check out the other designer’s amazing projects until tomorrow when the full reveal takes place! Hope to see you then!

Wow. This card is breathtaking. I did not even know it was possible to watercolor paint on black paper. I love the idea of enhancing the coloring with colored pencils, too. So lovely.
