Using Positive and Negative Die Cuts

Ilina Crouse

Hi everyone, Ilina here! Today I am sharing two cards using the new Swirl of Starlings Bold Prints stamp and the little bit older Paper Layering Hummingbird pair. When I started making my card I was going to have only one, but then they became two and nothing really went to waste.

I started with stamping my the background using Intense Black Ink onto Black Layering Paper (4" x 5 1/2") and Floral Mix Layering Paper (one 4" x 5 1/4" and one 3 3/4" x 5") using the MISTI tool, which ensured that the images will be at the same place each time. Then I stamped over it using Versamark ink and embossed with Sparkle embossing powder. Tip: It is best to start with 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" panels and then trim them.

I cut out two Paper Layering Hummingbirds from my black panel. Next I adhered the black negative space from the die cuts onto my Floral mix panel (light hue) that is 4" x 5 1/4", that was previously stamped and embossed. Because the MISTI was used the each time the card stock was positioned at the same spot, the layers should line up. (Tip: when you trim your panels, trim equally from each side). I added eyes with black and white pen. Next, I stamped the sentiment from Come Fly with Me set onto a Black Layering Paper strip and embossed with white embossing powder Added pearls from the Neutrals Mixed accents and assembled my card onto Floral mix folded note cards (the lightest hue).

For my second card, I used the die cut hummingbirds and adhered to the 3 3/4" x 5" floral panel, matching the embossed pattern on the birds with the ones on the background. I stamped the sentiment onto a strip of Black Layering Paper, and embossed in white. Added some black pearls from the Neutrals Mixed Accents and assembled my card.

Using both the positive and negative spaces from the die cuts, ensured I was left with very little waste at the end, and one more card. So it was a win-win.

Thank you for stopping by today and hope you are inspired to create something.
