Festive Felt Ornaments & Banner

Dec 07, 2018 Hero Arts

Hello and happy Friday! Today we welcome Grace Wilson back to the blog with some fabulous and festive felt projects. Handmade ornaments are a wonderful way to add a personal touch to your holiday decor, or even give as gifts, and these are so much fun to make! Now here's Grace to share more...

If you are like me, you spent many a Christmas season crafting with various generations of women in your family, spending late nights poring over muffin tins filled with seed beads and sequins, laughing while we swear bitterly at pin pricks and beads that disappear into oblivion if dropped. I come from a long line of strong women who shared a deep commitment to covering every inch of a felt creation with sequins. Thankfully, I have inherited this love, and even more thankfully, Hero Arts has made so many products that make these late-night craft sessions even easier, and more polished!

This year, I turned to an old favorite for my projects: the ornament. Where I would usually use a Styrofoam ball or free hand a felt ornament, I can now use dies! Thank goodness! Now with a few cranks of the cutting machine, I have perfect ornament shapes, and perfectly cut tiny snowflakes for decoration, just waiting for sequins and beads. Couldn’t be any easier, or more fun!

For these ornaments I used the Snowflakes Infinity Dies and the Twelve Point Stars Infinity Dies to cut out really fun colors of felt, keeping it in the color families, utilizing many of the different sizes for a multi-dimensional effect (and to squeeze in some more colors!)

To decorate I used basic metallic seed beads, and of course a generous supply of the Snow and Berry Sequins Mix and the Champagne Sequin Mix.

Then I started playing with the Snowflake Confetti Fancy Die, it is just too fun not to, and I made a really fun and simple festive banner for the mantle.

As an added bonus, I have a surplus of adorable tiny felt snowflakes for the ornaments, and plenty left over for my next festive project!

If you are looking to spice up your holiday decorations this year, or make great gifts for family, friends, teachers, neighbors, or charity events, I can’t recommend using Hero Arts dies with fun felts and plenty of sparkles enough! From one crafter to another, may your holiday season be merry, bright, and full of beautiful crafts that are easy to complete and share with those you love!

Hi Jan! I used a fine comb felt in a wool and poly blend. I have found that the type from a fabric store that comes by the bolt, rather than in a bundle, works best to get such clean edges. I sewed the beads on, using tiny snowflakes, or sequins under the bead for extra security and made the ornaments with multiple layers of felt to make sure the strings were hidden. I hope this helps, happy crafting!

What kind of felt did you used to get such clean Cutz? And could you tell us how you applied the tiny beads with such a clean look? When I do that I have glue marks all over everything.
