Falling into Digital Backgrounds

Today we're happy to have a special guest return to the blog – Essie! She is sharing some great cards using new digital products from our September release. Take it away, Essie!

Hi crafty friends, Essie here to encourage you to put some digital backgrounds into your card making bag of tricks!

The new Scattered Leaves Digital Kit is a great way to kick off fall cardmaking! It’s full of individual fall leaves, a background, and a leaf border. For today’s cards, I used the leaf border image in a Google slide format and made a quick handful of A2 sized card front images in different fall colors. (You could simply use the pre-formed leaf background image that is part of the kit – I was just enjoying trying out the border!) Here are those pretty (and pretty simple!) backgrounds:

Next, I used each of these backgrounds to make four completely different cards using some of my favorite Hero Arts autumn-themed stamps and dies.

Card 1: As we enter into our season of gratitude, a nice big thanks in black with an acorn and an oak leaf tucked behind make a perfect seasonal thank you for my card hoard.

Card 2: Using the Hug in a Mug Stamp & Cut XL, I’ve made another fall card… and for sure the beverage in this mug is pumpkin spice flavored! To help the image stand out a bit, I’ve backed it with a vellum oval.

Those were easy, and very graphic cards. Now for a bit of coloring.

Card 3: Using a happy little fox and some pumpkins, leaves, and a sentiment from the stamp & die set in the September Premium Elements of the My Monthly Hero kit, I made a tiny no-line coloring scene using Contour Ink and some watercolor crayons. No-line coloring intimidates me, so a tiny scene seemed a good practice piece. I wondered if the bold background would eclipse the pale colors of my scene, but I do think it worked in the end.

For card 4, I used my brand new Fall Fox stamp set, stamped in black on white cardstock and colored with Copics. I cut the image and sentiment out with a Nesting Cirlce Infinity Die and, to tie the image to the background, I added an acorn and a leaf die – again using my Autumn Leaves Fancy Dies for an acorn and a maple leaf, very lightly blended in colors that mimic the card background and the blended ground the little fox is standing on. Easy, but effective.

And that’s it – four sweet and easy cards with what I’d call a “fall rainbow” of super quick leafy backgrounds. I hope you enjoyed them!

Thanks for all the great inspiration, Essie!
