Color Palette Challenge!

Oct 20, 2018 Lisa Stein

Good morning! I hope you're having a great first day of your weekend. Lisa here to tell you about our latest challenge at A Blog Named Hero and hope that you'll join in on the fun.

We are using this picture as our inspiration and so far we've seen some gorgeous entries!

I made a simple anniversary card to help inspire you, and I love how it turned out. It looks a bit like a stained glass mosaic to me, in the pictures. Read on and you'll learn what else I think it looks like.

As you can see, while I was inspired by the color palette, I didn't match it exactly. I have just a shade or two brighter versions of those colors.

I stamped the Branches Bold Prints stamp onto some watercolor paper with Versamark ink. I sprinkled that with Copper Embossing Powder and heat set it until it was shiny. Then I took the third largest Rounded Infinity Rectangle Die and moved it around on the background until I liked the placement and ran it through my die cutting machine to get my card front.

I scribbled my watercolor markers onto a palette and used a watercolor brush to apply color to various sections of the background. I had originally planned to fill it all in, but as I was working on it, I realized that with some white areas it reminded me of when I look up through a canopy of trees and see the sky.

Once I had colored it in to my satisfaction I added more layers of color to deepen some sections and just to get a more organic feel, as these were now leaf canopies (in my mind) and they wouldn't be perfectly shaded. For the sentiment I used a stamp from Everyday Sayings, and coincidentally, my anniversary is next month and now I am prepared.

Side Note: on our anniversary, I make a card, write a note in it, and give it to my husband in the morning. He writes back to me and gives it to me that night. It's just a little tradition that we've come up with and it makes me happy to look back on them whenever I come across one in the house.

I hope I've inspired you to join our challenge at A Blog Named Hero this month. Great autumnal colors, and if it's spring where you are, just go brighter like I did! There are prizes to be won, you know you could use a Hero Arts gift certificate, so make sure to enter.

I am truly loving this card. Seeing the stamped image as a “canopy” gives it new dimension. It would be interesting to see it realistically painted as such. The segmenting also conjures up endless possibilities.
