Bold Backgrounds with White Ink on Black Cardstock

Hi crafty friends! Charlene here, and today I’m spotlighting a favorite technique: stamping with white pigment ink on black cardstock. It’s a simple way to create high-impact contrast, and the August 2025 Cling of the Month: In the Valley is perfect for it. I paired this bold background with layered portraits and metallic accents for a richly detailed look.

August 2025 Cling of the Month

To begin, I stamped In the Valley Cling Stamp onto an A2-sized panel of Pitch Black Cardstock using Unicorn Pigment Ink. I stamped it multiple times to build a crisp white impression against the deep black background. The result is full of depth and texture and is one of my favorite ways to let background stamps shine.

Next, I turned to the focal elements. I stamped the Abraham and Katrina figures from the August Card Kit of the Month using a mix of Core Inks. Abraham’s layers include Sand, Wet Cement, Espresso, Fresh Lawn, Granite, and Charcoal. For Katrina, I used Sand, Wet Cement, Espresso, Orchid, and Amethyst. I added the final detail layer on both with Intens-ified Black Ink, then die cut the images with the coordinating dies.

I created framed backgrounds for each figure using the Victorian Frame Dies, combining Matte Metallic Cardstock and Dove White Cardstock for the frame layers. I backed Abraham with Kiwi Cardstock and Katrina with Amethyst, then assembled each piece with Precision Glue.

To finish the card, I added a sentiment from the Card Kit of the Month stamped in Intens-ified Black Ink on Dove White Cardstock. I also included two large moths from the August Stamp & Cut of the Month: You Are Magic, stamped and die cut for a mystical accent.

I assembled everything using foam squares to add subtle depth. The stark background, detailed layering, and metallic touches combine to create a card that feels atmospheric and grounded.

If you haven’t tried white ink on black cardstock, this is a great place to start. With its rich detail, the In the Valley Cling Stamp instantly elevates the background without needing much else.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope this inspires you to explore bold backgrounds in your next project!

Happy crafting!
