Stenciling Over a Watercolor Background

Dec 26, 2022 Jayne Nelson

Like so many of you, flower stamps and flower dies are a personal favorite of mine. So when I saw the new Color Layering Stellar Flowers Bundle, with it’s fresh and modern floral designs, I was immediately smitten. The celestial inspired Color Layering Stellar Flowers Bundle contains ten, unique floral stamps that can be layered and mixed, six wonderful sentiment stamps, five additional, small stamps and nine coordinating Frame Cuts.

To make today’s birthday card, I started by creating a starry sky background for these bold, celestial flower images. First, I cut a panel of Luxe White Watercolor Paper with a Nesting Rectangle Infinity Die. Then, using Berry Smoothie, Blue Hawaii, and Grape Slush Reactive inks, I swiped each ink pad directly onto my craft mat. After lightly misting the inks with water and swirling them a bit with my finger, I gently pressed the watercolor paper panel into the wet ink. To achieve a brighter background, I repeatedly pressed the panel into the remaining ink until I was satisfied with the color.

Once the panel was fully dried, I positioned the Star Cluster stencil over the background and stenciled a swirl of white stars across the panel with Unicorn White ink and a Blending Brush. The white ink stars on the pastel, watercolor sky creates a beautiful but subtle background for the card’s focal images. I secured the finished panel to a Passion Flower card base.

To create the pair of flowers at the card’s center, I stamped pairs of solid flowers, stems and leaves with Cornflower, Passion Flower, Summer Sky, and Ultra Pink inks onto Dove White cardstock. Then, before cutting around each shape with the matching Frame Cut, I stamped the outline layers over each piece with Intens-ified Black ink. I secured the stems directly to the card with Precision Glue and then added the flowers and leaves to the card with foam tape.

For the card’s two sentiments, I stamped a small hello message directly onto the card, between the flowers, with black ink. Then, I also stamped and embossed a birthday sentiment onto a strip of Pitch Black cardstock with Clear Embossing & Watermark Ink and White Embossing Powder. I finished the card with a trio of Purple Enamel Dots for some shine.

Thanks so much for stopping by today and throughout the past year. I hope your new year is stellar and crafty!
