For best results when stamping onto transparencies, apply firm pressure but be careful to not allow your stamp to slide on the ‘slippery’ surface.

Consider stamping onto your embellishments (such as these felt flowers) for added interest and an element of surprise.

Create custom-made boyish embellishments by combining stamped fabric with a star die-cut!

Tip: Canvas material is readily available at many craft stores and it is a great, thick material for stamping. It holds the ink well and is a fun texture to add to any project.

Beyond Paper
By Leslie Lightfoot

Last month we covered how fun and freeing it can be to use your stamps in new and unique ways. I showed you how to look things a bit differently and gave examples of 2 layouts that used a variety of mediums other than ink pads to transfer the stamped image.

Instructions:
This month I am happy to expand on this a bit! Let’s talk about all the possibilities we have for stamping on things other than just cardstock paper. You will enjoy the freedom of choosing whatever tickles your fancy and who doesn’t like creating something a bit different than everyone else. Keep in mind that some of the suggestions below may not be archival safe and if this is something that concerns you, just take the precautions to ensure a buffer between the materials you use on your layouts. Experiment with all the things you find around you and have fun! Create exciting projects by stamping onto some of the following:
  • Plastic
  • Fabric (canvas, felt, etc)
  • Metal
  • Into Clay
  • Transparencies
  • Leather, Suede
  • Foam
  • Cork/Wood
  • Chipboard or cardboard
  • Embellishments such as paper flowers, buttons, etc.

“Miss Thing” by Leslie Lightfoot

Leslie designed this layout to feature several different ‘stamping on things other than cardstock’ examples. These include the transparency, the copper thin metal, and the felt buttons. The metal stamped with white is very pretty in real life and has a high shine look to it that paper could not create. Tips:

  1. When Stamping on metal, you should use StazOn ink pads: these dry quickly and do not smear or bead when stamped onto non-porous surfaces.
  2. Stamping on transparencies is simple and you can add special detail to your design by painting (filling in the voids) with acrylic paints on the backside of the transparency.

“One of a Kind” by Robyn Werlich

For this layout, Robyn used some white canvas and die-cut it into stars. Then she stamped with paint and chalk ink to add some fun personality to the page. She also stamped on a metal star with StazOn white ink. The porous qualities of the fabric she stamped on creates a fun and casual look to the stamped image – something a bit different! Tips for stamping with bleach:

  1. Canvas material is readily available at many craft stores and it is a great, thick material for stamping. It holds the ink well and is a fun texture to add to any project.
  2. Add some shine to your stamps by detailing with gemstones.
