Tip: Use clear stamps to create entire words on an acrylic block and stamp all at once on to your paper.

Use a light hand when inking tiny stamps, this helps not to get blotchy images.

Personalizing Cards with Alphabets
By Shari Carroll

Alphabet stamps are one of the handiest tools your can have in your stash. I like to use them to personalize my cards in unique ways. I can create my greeting in my own words or to fit an occasion that is not commonly found in messages.

Instructions:

Have you ever searched for the perfect greeting only to settle for what you have instead? Try using alphabet stamps to get your true message across.

They are wonderful for spelling out names and places for scrapbook pages and cards.

Another fun way to use letters is to mix a couple sets together to create a random look.

Holiday

Not only are letters great for greetings, they work wonderfully in other languages. International borders are broken down one letter at a time. My friends in the UK take a Holiday every year so using an alphabet set was a great way for me to express my thoughts for them on my card.

  1. Stamp the clouds pattern onto a white card with Soft Pool Ink.
  2. Cut a curve from green cardstock, affix it to the card. Trim a tree trunk from Kraft cardstock, affix in place.
  3. Fold a flower to form a palm tree, affix in place.
  4. Punch a butterfly from pink paper, affix in place.
  5. Wrap the card with ribbon and tie a knot.
  6. Stamp the personalized greeting with dark brown ink just above the ribbon.
  7. Add gemstones as desired.

Spring

Try creating small tiles as I've done for this card. This is also a perfect technique if you're just learning or have trouble lining up your wood block letters.

  1. Cover a card with pattern papers. (Making Memories)
  2. Stamp the Pattern Swirl with Soft Sand onto white cardstock. Trim and distress the edges with your thumbnail or a tool.
  3. Stamp the panel using Soft Leaf ink with the branch pattern from the Scattered Leaves Clear Design set.
  4. Affix the panel to the card.
  5. Fold paper flowers and affix to the branch.
  6. Stamp letters onto scrap white cardstock with Soft Blossom ink. Cut and affix to the card.
  7. Add ribbon tied in a knot to finish.
Happy Birthday

Add additional words to a greeting to make it a bit more personal. I've added "My Favorite Niece" to the birthday message by using letters. This is an example of how to extend the use of message stamps too.

  1. Stamp the Birthday greeting onto Pool and white cardstocks. Trim the white image omitting the border, affix it to the Pool stamped image and trim around the border.
  2. Stamp your personal greeting onto a strip of pink cardstock. Cut to size and adhere it to the birthday panel.
  3. Stamp a Sherbet card with with Soft Apricot ink and the Scattered Flowers stamp.
  4. Affix the panel to the card and add ribbon, flowers and pearls to finish.

Check out some of Hero Arts Letter sets for ones that have numbers too. These are perfect for celebrating specific birthdays, anniversaries and making Birth Announcements.
