Fun Grungy Friday and a Giveaway

Friday, November 14th, 2008

You’ve got it, today is about working with Tim Holtz’s idea-ology Grungeboard.  Have you had a chance to play with it?  This is the most fantastic medium.  You can ink it, stamp it, use paint, cut it, curl it, get your aggressions out and pound on it, you name it!  I’ve got to hand it to Tim for developing such an awesome product.

Here is my very first attempt with Grungeboard.  I’m not an expert with it, but man is it fun! I stayed pretty basic with my techniques, but was thrilled with the results.  I used crackle paint on the butterfly wings and heart, when they were dry, I stamped with Walnut Stain.  Oh, and I used a left over tag from Monday.  :o)

Distress-me Wednesday

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Today is all about distressing.  No, not damsels in distress…lol, but rather intentional distress techniques.

Not sure why you would want to add distressing methods to your cards?  Here’s a little insight.  When edges are finished, they create depth which is appealing to the eye.  We think of distress as vintage, which is mostly true, but not always.  I like to subtly edge some of my pieces on a card so that white core of cut out pieces don’t interrupt with the flow of the card design.  I also like how distressing helps me to add a skosh of warmth.  Here’s an example.

I’ve edged the pattern paper and the cardstock with a bit of Walnut Stain ink.  I’ve also used a hint of ink on the birds especially at the tips of the wings.

Supplies:

I’ve taken distressing to a higher level in this example where I’ve used Tim’s edging tool to scrape up the cardstock and sandpaper to distress the pattern paper.  Also to finish it off, I’ve sewn a border and pulled the paper up from the card.

Supplies:

  • Scroll Tree
  • Accent Pearls
  • Other: Tim Holtz Walnut Distress Ink and Inkssentials applicator, Tim Hotlz Tonic edge distresser, Basic Grey Paper and button, hemp, sanding block, white acrylic paint, emery board and sewing machine.

What’s interesting about this card is that there is only one stamped image on it yet there is plenty to look at.  Just by taking a little time, adding simple finishing touches, you can make a card rich and full.

Here’s a video with some distressing tips that you can incorporate into your cardmaking.

Have you started your cards for the Technique Challenge yet?  You still have plenty of time, remember to load them to the Flickr group by 11:59pm PST Sunday evening, November 16th. Be sure to tag them with the code word “technique”.

I’ll be back on Friday with a great treat!

Enjoy and create!

An ir-RESIST-able Tuesday

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Welcome Back!  Today I’m going to run through several ways to do Resist.  This is a valuable technique for many reasons.  First of all you get a negative image from your stamps which extends their uses and you can create colorful backgrounds with your inks.

Here’s how it works:  A medium will act as a barrier so additional ink cannot saturate the paper. Think of oil and water and how they resist each other, the medium is the oil and it resists the ink which is the water.

Let’s take a peek at my video.

This is an example of clear embossing on a tag with inks and water mixed over top.

And some left over samplings from my video

And one of my double doses of goodness, resist over pattern paper, YUM!

Supplies:

There are many mediums available to use for this technique such as: Tsukineko VersaMark watermark pad, Tim Holtz Distress Clear Embossing ink, Ranger Perfect Medium, Ranger Clear Resist ink,  Clearsnap Top Boss Watermark pad and Stewart Superior Palette Embossing and Watermark pad. These inks can be used on glossy paper by themselves, or on matte paper with heated clear embossing powder. I prefer to use clear embossing powder with my medium which allows me to use a wider variety of papers.

Are you ready to dig out your inks and give it a try? I’d love to hear about what you think.  I’ll be flying to Hero Arts today, but I’ll check in tonight when I get settled.

Have a great day and Create!

An Ink-a-licious-Monday

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Welcome back everyone. Hope your weekend was spectacular.  Are you ready for a technique week? I asked you what you wanted to see and I’ve listened. Each day this week I will give you an in depth look at some of your suggestions. Along with learning new ideas I have some goodies to giveaway, a fun challenge, plus a few videos.

Today I’m working with ink and color.  A few of you asked me how I achieve color on my backgrounds.  With a bit of ink, some great applicator processes and alas, we have it.  But first, before I show you the goods, I’ve got to thank my friend Tim Holtz for being so intuitive to develop some of the best products available on the market.  Thanks Tim!

Today’s video covers some of the basic ways to apply ink to paper, I will be repeating some of these processes as I delve in to other techniques throughout the week.  Let’s take a peek.

These are a few tags I made with the techniques from the video.  I’ve applied ink to the tags and then stamped them with my favorite image.
