Hero Arts is a Small Business of the Year!

Happy Friday everyone! Today we have some very exciting news to share from our CEO, Aaron Leventhal:

Hero Arts has won a 2011 Small Business of The Year award for our sustainability and green business practices! This award program recognizes small California businesses that have demonstrated exceptional business leadership and taken action to reduce their environmental impact, greenhouse gas emissions and made notable, voluntary achievements towards reducing their climate impact. For more details on the award, visit CoolCalifornia.org, a division of the California Environmental Protection Agency.

Congrats! I have recycled junk mail and product packaging to use in my card making. I make some pretty stinkin’ cute cards from flowers cut from a Kotex box. No one would know!

    Congrats on this award!
I am BIG on recycling… even haven taken things thrown in the garbage at a family members’ home, rinsed it out and asked where the recycling container was! (Rude or “green”?)

I am a teacher and have taught my students about recycling. They are 41/2-5 years old. They all now do not use ziplock bags for their lunch items. I’ve gotten the parents to use reusable containers only for lunch! The children also have learned the “recycle triangle” on packaging items and they put them in the recycle can. We also recycle paper by using both sides of the paper and reuse paper scraps in various creative ways!

I’ve started picking up recyclables when I’m jogging… People look funny at the jogger carrying a beer bottle!

I try to use things for more than one purpose - for instance - my Sunday newspaper has those comic papers each week. I save them and when I need wraping paper for a gift, I use the comic paper. There is always a bit of ribbon somewhere that will match something on the paper and wah lah! I have a cool package. I’m putting my dollars inside the box rather than wrapping the box with a purchased more costly paper. I then go to my pile of scrap paper left over from cards, etc. and make my name tag out of that - again, there’s always something that will match the comics. I’ve gotten lots of good comments over the years with this double use of something that would otherwise wind up being thrown away or recycled.

Wow! Congrats, Hero Arts! We reccyle everything plus we stopped using things that aren’t biodegradable like paper plates and paper cups. We no longer use throw-away plastic water bottles, but have our own personal water bottle that we use over and over. No waste. Empty containers from cottage cheese or sour cream are used to store left-overs. Plus we recycle everything.
