Puttin’ on the glitz!

Hi everyone! It’s Lisa here, and I’ve got a sparkly, twinkly week planned for you all about one of my favorite things: GLITTER! I just love how it adds that extra “little something” to a card, yet it requires almost no effort and no expensive supplies.

And, glitter lasts forever!  See that bottle of Hero Arts Prisma Glitter?  I’ve had that for YEARS.  (The new packging is the white jar in front.)

And, glitter is just so darn yummy.  Okay, have I convinced you yet to break out that glitter?  No? Well then, how about some cards!

First up is this super simple one featuring the Clear Design Cozy Moments set — that steam and candy cane were just calling out to have Diamond Glitter Glue on them!

I just love that Design Block Antique Flower Background — it kinda reminds me of old fashioned wallpaper.  So pretty.

Supplies:

Glittery Tips:

  • Clear glitter glue such as Diamond Glitter Glue is a must-have supply, as it goes with everything!  If you only succumb to one glitter, get this one.
  • To make the red glittery background, I just ran a line of Candy Cane glitter glue along the edge, them sort of swiped it around with my finger.

For this next card, I used a glue pad to stamp the Cling Flourish Background, then I sprinkled on the glitter.  (A glue pad is just like an ink pad, except there’s glue instead of ink.)  It looked so pretty and sparkly that I almost didn’t want to cover it up — so I just added a message.  There’s some blank cards here in the photo so that you can see what I mean.  And! I think this message goes perfectly, ha ha!

I also added brown glitter around the edges with the Fine Ball Point Glue Pen — it works great for getting glitter in little spots.

Glittery Tips:

  • There are many different kinds of glue pads on the market — all work great!  You’ll want to use a fine glitter with this so that it sticks, and you can expect a little to rub off — but not too much.
  • Look for ribbons that have glitter in them — they’ll match your glittery cards perfectly!

And, I have one last card to share with you today with bunches of glittery goodness!  You might want to put on your shades before looking at this one…

Let’s step through all of the glittered elements on this one, starting with the green frame.  I created that by using super strong double sided tape and sprinkling on glitter — instant frame!  Yay!

Next I couldn’t resist adding Diamond Glitter Glue to the snowflakes and then above the branch that the bird is sitting on — kinda how real snow gathers on branches!  Now for the buttons…

I added some sparkle to them by rubbing the some Frosted Lace Glitter Glue all over them with my finger.  Messy but fun!  Then while I was at it, I added MORE glitter glue to the Poinsettia Art Flowers — here’s a before and after shot so that you can see what a difference it makes…

And! Here’s a closeup of the finished buttons + poinsettias all together — I covered up the button holes with Silver Metallic Decor:

I can’t wait to send this card to someone!

Glittery Tips:

  • Add sparkle to embellishments by rubbing on glitter glue.  I like to use clear Frosted Lace or Diamond Glitter Glue, but sometimes I experiment with colors.  And! To keep the embellishment from scooting around while you are glittering it, use a glue dot to temporarily adhere it to a scrap of paper.
  • Add contrasting elements without glitter such as the Silver Metallic Decor and the dry embossed background to really make the glitter shine!
  • The Sparkle Clear Beautiful Christmas stamp is actually a tag.  I used the glittered poinsettia to cover up the “to/from” part of the image.

Now for our weekly challenge! Create a card, layout, or project that uses glitter, then it to the Hero Arts Flickr group by 11:59pm PST on Sunday, November 15th. All entries should be tagged with the word glitter. Please include at least one Hero Arts stamp or digital element on your creations. By entering, you could win a shopping spree of your choice of Hero Arts products from the Hero Arts Online Store! (Shipping charges apply.) Winners will also receive a 2009 Hero Arts catalog, sent separately. The prize amounts are as follows:

  • Fresh Face Winner (someone who has not yet won a contest): $50
  • Digital Winner (create something using a Hero Arts Digital Kit): $50
  • 1st Place: $50
  • 2nd Place: $25
  • 3rd Place: $15

Are you new to using glitter and aren’t sure how it’s all done?  Check out a video HERE that I did a while back!

And, one last Big Tip for today — don’t glitter your cards with the ceiling fan on high, especially when you’re using your husband’s desk and his cell phone is sitting nearby, ha ha ha!  (Although, he did look rather cute with that glitter on his cheek!)

Got a glittery tip to share?  I’d love to hear it!  Just leave a comment below.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more ideas for using glitter on your stamped projects.  Until then, don’t miss the very first Sneak Peek of the Hero Arts 2010 Catalog, right HERE!

Hope I’ve convinced you to break out your glitter and join in the challenge!

Have a sparkly day,

I am just starting to use glitter - must be the season. I’m hooked! My tip is to glitter anything left white on my card. I use all different types, but I’m loving the Ranger Frosted Lace distress stickles. It’s beautiful on white Prima flowers.

I looooooooooooooove glitter! I discovered that with a little persistance, Jac paper can be die cut, stuck down and covered with glitter. The effect is a beautiful shiny surface.

I also love to glitter white or light colored prima flowers, and I like to take a glue pen & follow the lines of a stamped flourish, then I add glitter :)

I just took a look at the glitter at the Art Institute Glitter website and they seem to have 2 types of glitter: transparent and opaque. Also, their glass glitter seems to be transparent. Has anyone used their products?

I’m loving the glittery goodness! My holiday cards will be festively sparkled for sure!
Here’s my tip: I love Stickles, but I have created my own home made version by mixing glitter into liquid glue (any glue that dries clear) and applying it to the surface to be glittered with a paintbrush. Great for custom coloring or creating your own mix. It might also work for a more transparent application…a white or pale color added sparingly to the glue will allow what’s underneath to show through.
    Thanks to everyone for sharing!
