School’s Out for the Summer! + giveaway
I have always LOVED kid’s artwork…maybe that’s why I was an art teacher K-12. When we would go on our yearly spring break, I would take a blank book and have my sons draw images and I would write in the details of each day.
Since TODAY happens to be my granddaughter Jasmine’s 5th birthday, I decided to show you HER portrait of ME! She drew it on our trip last month to Half Moon Bay. It does look like me, right down to the earrings and necklace!!
I decided to make that drawing into a birthday for HER today!!! Happy Birthday Jas!!
Supplies:
- Special Day Words
- Happy Birthday to You
- Getaway Travel
- Memories Black Ink
- Memories Ruby Ink
- Yellow Gemstones
- Blossom Notecards
- Other: paper scraps
So, if your kids give you the standard “I’m bored” line this summer, have them create a book or make them a travel bingo game. I mounted mine on cardboard for durability.
Supplies:
- Simple and Basic Alphabet
- Ink ‘n’ Stamp Spring Messages
- Ink ‘n’ Stamp Happy Animals
- Getaway Travel
- Memories Black Ink
- White Notecards
- Other: watercolor pencils
Or how about a matching “tiles” or letter game. Simply adhere colored card stock to lightweight cardboard and stamp some pieces. You can make them more durable with laminating film or packing tape. (We needed entertainment with all the RAIN out east!!!…and my new addiction…Bananagrams!!)
Supplies:
- Sky’s The Limit
- Bold Caps Alphabet (I just noticed this is on sale in the store! Great for little kids)
- Memories Black Ink
- Other: cardstock scraps, laminate film or tape
Remember the green travel book from yesterday made from lime notecards? Here is a short video on how to make it:
In honor of Jasmine’s 5th birthday, let’s give away FIVE small grab bag prizes! Just leave a comment on today’s post and maybe you will be a lucky winner! I will announce the winners on Friday morning.
I hope you all are gathering lots of ideas to join in on the “vacation” challenge!! See you on Friday!

My young cousins have been telling me they’re bored. I just can’t understand it. I remember being bored during summer breaks, but there was so much less to do then! I had no cable and no internet, of course I was bored, they have both! But craft projects are more productive.

I hope your granddaughter has or had a great b’day! Thanks for the wonderful video. Great tip on the large stamps–I need to try that next time.

Happy Birthday Jasmine. Your grand-daughter is beautiful and very creative, wonder where she gets it from. Love your idea with the game pieces, would be very easy to store, not take up much room when traveling. But the best part of all is that you can personalize it with any theme you want, there would be no limit. Great ideas and they are ones the kids can participate in, they’ll want to brag and what great gift ideas. You inspire my creative juices to flow, no matter how bad a day I have, crafting always lifts me up.
