Watch It Wednesday: Fun card + a video!
Welcome to Watch It Wednesday! Today I have a video to share with you about the colored pencil techniques I used on this trifold card for my friend Sally. She made a super fun apron for me using fabric that has apples + pears on it, and this is the thank-you card I made for her.
I just had to use the apron from the new Clear Design What’s Cooking set + the Design Accents Four Apples set — they were just too perfect to pass up!
Here’s the front — that’s the apron in the background:
Here’s how it looks when you open the front:
And here’s the inside
I also had to use the Clear Design Woodland Creatures set — not because they are her favorites, but as a joke because she doesn’t like the woodland critters — especially the raccoon, ha ha ha! (Can you believe it?) And, for another little joke I included a gift card to Pinkberry — I got it when we were there together — hopefully she didn’t see me…! (Not stamping related, but they have the best frozen yogurt!)
Now to the video – if you’ve been hesitant to try and use colored pencils, never fear — there’s a quick intro! All of the coloring is done with just regular old colored pencils — nothing else.
Featured Supplies:
- NEW! Clear Design: What’s Cooking
- Clear Design: Woodland Creatures
- Screen Shadow
- Design Accents: A Little Note
- Design Accents: Four Apples
- Design Block Scattered Flowers
- Primary Elements Chalk Ink, Memories Black Ink
- Blossom, Sunshine Notecards
- Other: heart ribbon (American Crafts), pink pom-pom ribbon (Bazzill) colored pencils (Prismacolor), teal cardstock, scallop border bunch (Fiskars), paper edge distressor (Tonic for Tim Holtz)
Next I thought I’d share the colored pencils pencils that I used in the video in case you wanted to try this:
- Apple with seeds: chartreuse + green apple
- Apple without seeds: deco pink, pink, scarlet lake
- Raccoon: black, white, cool grey 70%, cool grey 30%
And, here’s a larger-than-life-extreme-closeup of the stamped designs that I covered in the video:
And some tips:
- When looking for inspiration for a card, think of what your friend likes — or doesn’t, ha ha!
- Don’t try to erase “mistakes” when doing colored pencils — you’ll only make it worse.
- I love using colored pencils because they are so portable! You just need the pencils + a pencil sharpener to get great results.
- To make the trifold card, trim a piece of cardstock to 4″ x 12″, then score at 4″ and 8″ and fold.
- Stamp a background with a DesignBlock + shadow ink for a neat tone-on-tone look in a jiffy! That’s what I did on the inside of the trifold.
Thanks so much Sally! I really, really, REALLY do love the apron! And, I treasure our friendship. Hugs! :)
Tomorrow we’ll be announcing the winners of last week’s Favorites Challenge — wait until you see! I’ll be back on Friday with more fun friendship projects.
Until then, hope you enjoy the video! Please leave me a comment if you have any questions.
Update: ALL of the stamps from today’s card (plus more!) are now HERE in the store! Plus Shadow Inks, too. Woo hoo!

Hi Deb! I shared all of the hints I could think of in the video — oh wait, I just thought of one more — make sure you color on a smooth surface — otherwise the texture could come through the paper — like when you do a rubbing, you know?
Also, check out Friday’s post for Sally’s birthday card, ha ha!

what a fabulous little video - just what I needed, especially as I have some new pencils but I don’t do much with them except use them for block colouring, so I was interested to see your mixing of colours - all I need to know now is how the heck do you know which colours to put in which corners?!? I suppose it’s all practice really!!

Someone may have mentioned this, but the Four Apples link goes to the Woodland Creatures stamp set.

Thank You so much for the colouring tutorial. My colouring has a lot to be desired and this video has given me some confidence to try and do it more.
