It’s Monday! Here’s the new challenge and a video…

Hello again! It’s my turn to host the Hero Arts blog again, and I am very excited. I love all the fun going on here !

This week we are going to focus on backgrounds of all sorts. I will be sharing a bunch of cards throughout the week - each showing a different background technique. And, since one of the things I am currently addicted to is creating video how-to’s, I will be sharing several videos, too!

Today’s video shows a background created using embossed resist. For this technique, you simply stamp an image with Versamark ink and then emboss with clear embossing powder on white cardstock. After heating it, just rub a pigment or chalk ink (I prefer chalk ink) over the image generously and then rub away the excess ink with a babywipe. Viola! The embossed image “resists” the added ink, creating a “ghost-like” image. This is a fun technique to use for backgrounds. The video shows the steps to create the card below.

By the way, Hero Arts has new HUGE stamps called “DesignBlock” which are perfectly sized to create backgrounds on notecards. These stamps are made with a high-quality, lighter-weight wood that are much easier to stamp with, resulting in a perfect image every time. I used the DesignBlock Stencil for these cards… it is a favorite of mine and a best seller. They are great for backgrounds on scrapbook pages, too. (HERE is an example of a layout using the DesignBlock Stencil stamp. And HERE is another!) Now… to our challenge…

This week’s challenge is to create a project with a stamped background. It can be a card, scrapbook page or anything - just be sure to create a stamped background and use at least one Hero Arts stamp. I can’t wait to see what you come up with… your projects have been so inspiring each week! Simply submit your entry to the Hero Arts Flickr Group by May 18 at 11:59pmPST and tag it with the code word “background“. (See the FAQ for more on Flickr.) We will pick several winners, and here are some of the great prizes:

1st place: $50 of new Hero Arts stamps + a 2008 catalog

2nd place: $25 of new Hero Arts stamps + a 2008 catalog

3rd place: $10 of new Hero Arts stamps + a 2008 catalog

Thanks for stopping by once again. Be sure to stop by each day this week for more ideas, videos, special guests and surprise prizes. Have a great day!

hey Jennifer- I tried your resist technique last night. How long should the background dry after you’ve inked over before you wipe w/ a baby wipe? I did it almost immediately and a lot of the ink came off that shouldn’t have.

I have a question: when you say you used a baby wipe to buff the image up, is it a wet one? Didn’t look so from the video…….

Jennifer, I could watch your video demos all day! Thank you so much for offering your time and inspiration to us all. I adore Hero Arts stamps and have quite a collection even though I only started stamping recently. I wish all the rubber stamp designs came in clear stamps coz they are so much fun to use and easy to store.
I have a couple of questions, Is the clear embossing powder thick or just the ordinary sort? And, when you use the baby wipes to remove the ink do you do it straight away or can you wait until it dries?
    Thank you.
